Things To Do Near Midhurst, West Sussex With The Kids This Summer!



It’s that time of year again, the kids are off school and you are wondering how to entertain them over the next 6 weeks! Here are some local events that may sark their interest.


Tree Champion at Wakehurst

Date: 21 July - 1 September 2023

Join the Nature Heroes Pip, Bud, and Sprout this summer as they lead you on an adventure around Wakehurst.

Learn about the world-saving abilities of trees and how to discover extraordinary super-trees beyond Wakehurst. Complete the mission, snap a selfie or two and gather all the trees for your super-tree team!


International Medieval Jousting Tournament

Date: 25 - 30 July 2023

Arundel Castle is proud to once again play host to the International Jousting Tournament. Over six days, eight jousters will fight to be crowned Champion of Champions, having been a past individual winner at Arundel or the top scorer for their country. Visitors can witness the thrilling display of horseback combat as the knights charge down the tilt rail and lances shatter on opponents’ shields.


It’s not all horses and the excitement of the joust; the arena will also host falconry, a fire eater and the renowned Arundel Castle ‘Kids Battle’. In the grounds, there will be medieval musicians, including Myal and Peg, and activities for visitors to try their hand at, including archery, warrior training, and axe throwing. The Knights’ Table, including a festival bar, will also be serving a spectacular feast.


Tickets include access to the castle, grounds and gardens, as well as full access to the event. So don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience the excitement of medieval jousting at one of England’s most iconic castles.


The Loxwood Joust

Date: 5, 6, 12 & 13 August 2023

In the magical Kingdom of Loxwood, you will be transported back in time to Medieval England. Interact with townsfolk and peasants and rub shoulders with royalty. Witness full-contact jousting, daring displays of weaponry, archery and cannon fire and experience the impressive knight-on-knight combat that will be waged in the quest for the shield.


Entering the realm via the magical forest, guests will be met by an array of colourful characters, each with a story to tell, rumours to spread or a favour to ask. Accept the right invitations, choose a quest and improve your standing from Citizen to Squire, to Vassal of Loxwood, in this unique day of adventure, intrigue, fun and merriment.


The Living History Village plays out life in the middle ages. Falconry displays, torture with the executioner, the witches’ incantations and an insight into the spirits of nature will capture your imagination and draw you into times past.


And for those looking to savour a host of authentic recreations from a mediaeval nobleman’s salver, the banqueting hall is the place to be. With dishes of the finest fayre served to accommodate both traditional and vegetarian palates; jesters, storytellers, live music and riddlers will lead a merry dance and embroil you in gossip and laughter.


Retro Wheels at Amberley Museum

Date: 5 - 6 August 2023

Amberley Museum are Celebrating over 200 years of the bicycle! Come and see a wide collection of bicycles ranging from historic and commercial to modern classics like BMX and Choppers and watch demonstrations in the pop-up skate park. Tickets must be pre-booked online for this event.


Cowdray’s Maize Maze and Sunflower Picking Patch

Date: Whole of August 2023

Your little ones may enjoy a visit to Cowdray’s inaugural Maze Maize, a fun challenge for the whole family. Visit for a chance to learn about farming at Cowdray, along with the incredible animals that make all the difference. At the start of the trail, young maze-goers will be given the Maize Maze stamp sheet to complete as they weave their way through the trail, collecting eight hidden stamps along the way.


1000ft Inflatable Obstacle Course at Leonards Lee Gardens

Date: 17 - 20 August 2023

Dodge through swinging blades, leapfrog over hurdles and bolt to the finishing line through the 1000ft long inflatable obstacle course. You get one hour to complete the course as many times as you can!

For the smaller members of your family there is a 200ft inflatable course designed specifically for children under 1.2m! With four differently themed zones, they will meet penguins in the artic, race past dinosaurs in the Jurassic era, clamber over pyramids through Egypt and bounce and roll their way through the jungle!


Summer of Play at Nymans

Date: From the 22nd July to 3rd September

Discover a summer jam-packed with fun at Nymans with plenty to keep everyone entertained throughout the holidays! Comber’s Field is the place for free-range fun, with a race track obstacle course to challenge the family and games of tug of war to see who’s the strongest. You’ll find loose parts play for creative minds here too.


For the explorers, head to the Play Glade, Nymans’ natural play space, build a den, clamber along balance beams and perform a song on the play stage! Look out for play points all around the garden, each with a different activity to try. At the top of the garden in the wildflower meadow, play a game of badminton and archery or try out some yoga poses and taskmaster challenges. On the croquet lawn, you can challenge each other to an energetic game of mini croquet!


For a summer treat, head to the horse box trailer for a well-deserved ice cream, which you’ll find in front of the ruins. You can also enjoy a picnic in the garden under a shady tree.


If you’re still feeling energetic, trek through the woodland to the lake. Here you’ll find shady glens and tranquil spots to enjoy your picnic. Last but not least, visit for a family theatre performance of the enchanting children's story, The Secret Garden, set against the backdrop of Nymans' iconic ruins on 28th August 6pm - 8pm!
